A note from the director

Welcome to our production of Kate Hamill’s Little Women. This script is an adaptation of the beloved novel by Louisa May Alcott. Since I was a little girl, the story of the March sisters — Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy — have been a beacon of hope and inspiration to me.

This play is set during the Civil War, a time when women’s roles were largely confined to the home. The March sisters’ determination to carve out their own paths is nothing short of revolutionary. Jo’s fiery independence, Meg’s balancing act between domestic life and love, Beth’s quiet strength, and Amy’s artistic ambition — all reflect the challenging journeys faced in seeking fulfillment beyond societal expectations.

Alcott’s theme is timeless and just as relevant today. Through this production, we hope to honor the spirit of resilience and courage that Alcott’s Little Women embodies. We hope when the curtain closes on Act II that you see this is not just a tale of sisterhood and family, but a powerful reminder of the importance of following one’s dreams: no matter the obstacles.

Fun facts

  1. Auditions were the second week of school!
  2. We started rehearsing the second week of September — 46 rehearsals in total.
  3. Actors and crew rehearse 5 days a week for two hours (sometimes Saturdays for 6 hours!).
  4. The cast has 15 actors and the crew has 13 — 28 students involved!
  5. All lights, sound, spotlights, and backstage are run by students.
  6. Tech Crew comes on Saturdays to build, paint, and fabricate the set, lights, and sound.
  7. Of the 29 students participating, 18 are returning and 11 are new.
  8. Some tech students worked with the costume team to learn to sew and help build costumes and makeup.
  9. 40 people worked on this show between students and adults.
  10. Little Women was written over 150 years ago. (Woah!)
  11. You can visit Louisa May Alcott’s real-life home, “Orchard House,” in Concord, Massachusetts.
  12. In 1987, Japan made a 48-episode anime version — you can still find it on YouTube!
  13. Alcott didn’t want to write the novel. Her editor asked for a story for girls and offered her father a publishing contract to motivate her.
  14. Alcott wrote the 402-page novel in only 10 weeks; four months after she started, it was published and became an instant classic!
